Hanging A-Net on the Birds of Prey

Preparations for the 2009 Audi Birds of Prey World Cup Race Week have been underway for a couple weeks now. Check out some pictures below taken Tuesday as course crews worked to hang A-Net along sections of the course that are hardest to get to and need to be done before the snow starts sticking to the ground.

The slideshow below shows photos from the hanging of nets 2 and 4. Net 2 (photos 1, 2, 3 & 9), is located near the Super G Start. Portions of that area on the Birds of Prey reach 45 degrees and are among the steepest on the World Cup circuit. The rest of the photos below were taken during the hanging of net 4, lower down the course. Net 4 is the Birds of Prey's longest section of "Doubled A Net."

Each net, weighing in excess of 100 pounds, is carefully unrolled and moved into position. Nets are stitched together via a series of knots and often doubled up in critical areas. From there they are hoisted into position via a series of booms alongside the course.

Mark your calendars for the 2009 Audi Birds of Prey World Cup Race Week December 4-6.

Pimp My Magic Bus

The build out for the Vail Valley Foundation's second Magic Bus is underway.

One of the Vail Valley Foundation's education efforts, the Magic Bus concept was introduced by the Vail Valley Foundation roughly 10 years ago and was created to increase youth literacy by bringing books to kids who had limited, if any, contact with reading materials. Seats were removed, cushions/bean bags were scattered on the floor, and some 800 books were shelved in what had been a 15-passenger “people mover.” The first Magic Bus currently serves 300 children a day by visiting day care centers located from Vail to Dotsero.

The photos below chronicle to date the building of a second Magic Bus. The expanded fleet, once complete, will double our ability to increase youth literacy in the Vail Valley. A special thanks goes out to Beaver Creek Resort Company for donating the "people mover" you see below that will soon be our second Magic Bus.

As with all VVF education efforts we appreciate all support. Your support of VVF education helps to sustain and enrich the Vail Valley. You can support the Magic Bus HERE.

Absinthe Film's Neverland at the VPAC Tonight

It's snowboard movie night at the VPAC tonight with Absinthe film's new movie Neverland.

According to Absinthe, Neverland is a state of mind, a mountain pushed up from the ground by imagination. Anyone can go but most people have trouble with the simple directions: Follow your dreams.

This winter Absinthe dropped down the rabbit hole to explore this elusive place and brought back some mind bending tales and a pocketful of surprises. Travis Rice, Dan Brisse, Bode Merrill, Nicolas Müller, Sylvain Bourbousson, JP Solberg, Romain deMarchi, DCP, Marc Frank Montoya, Annie Boulanger, Marie-France Roy, Jules Reymond, Wille Yli-Luoma, Cale Zima, Phil Damianakes, Wolfgang Nyvelt, Kevin Pearce, Eero Ettala, Gigi Rüf and the rest of the Lost Boys continued down the road less traveled and explored some new possibilities during a winter that saw the progression of snowboarding take some giant strides.

Join us at the VPAC tonight to take a trip down the rabbit hole yourself. Tickets are $10. More information and tickets can be found HERE.

Bode Miller Returns To U.S. Ski Team

When Bode Miller returns to Beaver Creek December 4-6 for the 2009 Audi Birds of Prey World Cup Race Week, he will once again be a member of U.S. Ski Team. The 31-year-old two-time overall World Cup champion announced September 24 that he would return to the Ski Team following two years of competing independently. The announcement came during a joint press conference at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Miller did not set a date for his return to World Cup competition, but is not expected to compete October 25 in the opening giant slalom in Soelden, Austria. It is hopeful that he will rejoin the tour in time for Birds of Prey.

His return to the Ski Team also opens the door for a return trip to the Olympics this coming February in Vancouver. As the lone member of his independent Team America, Miller would not have been eligible to participate in the Vancouver Games.

Miller has a career total of 31 World Cup victories to go along with his two World Cup overall titles in 2005 and 2008. Three of those wins have come on Birds of Prey in 2004, 2005 and 2006. He also owns a pair of Olympic silver medals from the 2002 Games in Salt Lake and five World Championship medals.

FIS Race Directors Visit Vail Valley For 2015 World Championships Inspection

While the December 4-6 Audi Birds of Prey World Cup Race Week in Beaver Creek features the top men's ski racers from around the world, the Vail Valley Foundation and Vail Resorts played host to both men's and women's FIS Race Dirctors last week as Guenter Hujara (Men's World Cup) and Atle Skaardal (Women's World Cup) paid a visit in conjunction with the Beaver Creek/Vail 2015 FIS World Championships bid.

Bid organizers took advantage of the two officials being in North America for inspections for both the Vancouver Olympics and the Aspen Ladies World Cup event to solicit input and outline potential options for the 2015 bid.

Over the course of the two days, Hujara and Skaardal, along with 2015 bid committee members and key staff from the Vail Valley Foundation and Vail Resorts, looked at the Birds of Prey finish area and walked the proposed women's Giant Slalom and Slalom course on Giant Steps in Vail.

On tap next for the 2015 bid is a presentation to the FIS inspection committee by the Foundation's Ceil Folz and Michael Imhof this Wednesday at the fall meetings in Zurich.

Birds of Prey Walk Through with Steven Nyman

On September 3 we tagged along with U.S. Ski Team athlete Steven Nyman for a walk through of the Birds of Prey Downhill in summer. Steven was in town for an NBC shoot talking about what it is like, from his perspective, racing the Birds of Prey. It was interesting to compare and contrast how one of the world's toughest downhills looks in September vs. what it looks like the first week of December. The Birds of Prey is the only men's World Cup race in the United States and takes place in Beaver Creek.

Mark your calendars for the 2009 Audi Birds of Prey World Cup Race Week, December 4-6.

Tomorrow Night: Edge of Never WORLD PREMIERE!

Tomorrow night we are very excited for the WORLD PREMIERE of "The Edge of Never,"
at the Vilar Performing Arts Center.

Part of the Vail Symposium's Beaver Creek Summer Film Series, the film follows Kye Peterson, the son of big-mountain skiing legend Trevor Peterson, to Chamonix, France—the so-called Death Sport Capital of the World—to the place that took his father's life.

The film chronicles Kye's journey to the same mountain that took his father's life, and his road to becoming a member of skiing’s big-mountain tribe. Kye’s story was recorded by William A. Kerig, a filmmaker with a dream of his own—to create a film about the soul of big-mountain skiing and the band of mountaineers who ski the steepest, wildest, most dangerous terrain in the world.

In The Edge of Never, Kerig gives us not only a ripping adventure tale about a young man coming of age but a frank and subtle portrait of the extreme skiers who "live big" in the face of death and risk everything to experience the fullness of life in the mountains.

Join us tomorrow night at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek to kick off your winter season with this long awaited world premiere.

A Little Bit of History

Here’s a little piece of history for our blog readers today. A couple weeks ago we co-hosted an event with Vail Resorts for World Cup champion Lindsey Vonn. The celebration at the Arrabelle at Vail Square featured a free concert and kicked off Lindsey's journey to the Winter Olympics in Vancouver and beyond.

The photo above was taken at that celebration as a group of former U.S. Women's Ski Team stars helped pass the torch to Lindsey and the current crop of American alpine women. Shown here are, from left-to-right, Christin Cooper, Lindsey Vonn, Cindy Nelson and Tamara McKinney. Within this group, there are a total of 51 World Cup victories, 13 World Championship medals, 2 Olympic medals and 3 Overall World Cup titles.

Also on hand for the celebration was Debbie Armstrong, 1984 Olympic Giant Slalom gold medallist, although Debstrong missed the photo op.

Join us December 4-6 as we welcome the world to Beaver Creek for the 2009 Audi Birds of Prey World Cup Race Week.

First Notes Photos

The Vail Valley Foundation's newest Education Initiative, First Notes, made it's debut during the 2009 Vail International Dance Festival.

Enjoy a sneak peak of photos including actual Vail Valley second graders participating in First Notes earlier this summer. First Notes is slated to be introduced into Avon Elementary School, with a goal of serving 150 students this fall. The program teaches local second graders by putting instruments in their hands as part of a pilot after school program.

Also enjoy a collection of photos of El Sistema students performing at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater during the Vail International Dance Festival. Our Firs Notes program is modeled after El Sistema which now teaches music to 300,000 of Venezuela’s poorest children, demonstrating the power of ensemble music to dramatically change the life trajectory of hundreds of thousands of a nation’s youth while transforming the communities around them.

Several of El Sistema’s graduates now rank amongst the most coveted young talent in Europe, including conductor Gustavo Dudamel and double bass player Edicson Ruiz, who at the age of 17 became the youngest musician ever to join the Berlin Philharmonic.

With a similar goal as the Foundation’s current Celebrate the Beat program, First Notes represents yet another VVF initiative that will have a dramatic impact on the lives of our valley’s children.

Foundation Extends Citizen Of The Year Nomination Deadline To September 4

It's not often that procrastinators get a second chance, but such is the case with community nominations for the 2009 Vail Valley Citizen of the Year Award as the Vail Valley Foundation has extended the deadline for submission to this coming Friday, September 4.

Nominations must come from full time residents of Eagle County and may be submitted via fax or email to the Vail Valley Foundation at (970) 949-9265 or info@vvf.org.

The nomination criteria for the Vail Valley Citizen of the Year Award include four qualifications. The individual or individuals must have contributed their time and effort to support and enhance the community programs of the Vail Valley. They must have demonstrated leadership, good will, passion and a tremendous desire to improve the community. They must have significantly contributed to the heritage of the Vail Valley and its future. And finally, they must have been a resident of Eagle County for at least four years.

Nominations must include the name and address of the person nominating, the name and address of the nominee, no less than one paragraph and no more than one page describing why the nominee should be selected as Citizen of the Year and why the nominee stands above others in the community in their service and leadership. Nominations should also include efforts that the nominee has led or key roles played within the valley that benefits the entire community.

Following the close of the nomination process, the Vail Valley Foundation selection committee will make their decision with the winner announced by the beginning of October. The award will be presented December 4 at the Black Diamond Ball, held in conjunction with the 2009 Birds of Prey World Cup Race Week in Beaver Creek.
