The von Trapp Children were asked to sing their arrangement of the Rwanda National Anthem at Kwita Izina in Africa next to the Congo. It was for the Mountain Gorilla Naming ceremony that helps protect the less then 600 Mountain Gorillas left in the world from poachers. Sofia, Melanie, Amanda and Justin von Trapp got the chance to see the country and sing for many orphanages set up and sponsored by Jack Hanna and Bridge to Rwanda. Check out the video below!

First Notes Performance Video

We recently had the pleasure of attending a First Notes concert at Avon Elementary. An education program of the Vail Valley Foundation, First Notes introduces music to second graders by putting instruments in their hands as part of a pilot after school program. The program strives to prove how the learning process of music in children not only enriches their spiritual and emotional experiences, but also accelerates their learning capacity in other subjects at school, developing and strengthening their ability to relate socially to the fast-paced and competitive world around them.

If you would like to support First Notes we are running a matching gifts campaign this holiday season in conjunction with Alpine Bank. TV8 Vail, Vail Echo, KZYR and the Vail Daily. Your gift to First Notes will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $5K by Alpine Bank.

CLICK HERE for complete details on giving the gift of education this holiday season.

A Little Christmas Magic With Curtis Adams

He calls himself an "extreme magician" and Curtis Adams promises to unleash a family spectacle to be remembered at the Vilar Performing Arts Center on Friday, December 25 for a special 4:30pm show.

Magic That Rocks will be like no other magic show you've seen, so check your old ideas and expectations of magic at the door.

"This is the new beginning, the new era of magic. It's magic with attitude," says Adams. "We're trying some new things that have never been done live on stage before." Adams injects a style of his own into the show that combines dangerous stunts and cutting-edge illusions with pyrotechnics and innovative lighting.

Curtis Adams has been called the next David Copperfield and even has Copperfield's Creative Director and Illusion Designer, Don Wayne, on board as Magic That Rocks' Director and Co-Creator.

Tickets to Curtis Adams Magic That Rocks are available online, by calling 888.920.ARTS (2787) or at the Box Office in Beaver Creek. Because of skier parking on Christmas day, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to park for free at the base of Beaver Creek and shuttle up to Beaver Creek Village for the 4:30pm show.

Have a magical Christmas!

Dickens' "Ghostly Little Tale" Returns

Even if you've seen it before, make it a holiday tradition for your family! The Nebraska Theatre Caravan returns to the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek for its annual showcase of A Christmas Carol on Wednesday, December 23 at 6:30pm.

2009 marks 160 years since Charles Dickens introduced the world to the miserly Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, and generation after generation have enjoyed this timeless tale. The recent Disney release of the story starring Jim Carrey has appeased movie audiences, but the staged version is what is truly enrapturing for all ages. It's a spellbinding fable of a man who is given the rarest of gifts—the chance to look in his heart and change his life.

Tickets are available online or through the Box Office in Beaver Creek. Here's all you need to know...

What: A Christmas Carol
When: Wednesday, December 23 at 6:30pm
Where: Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek
Tickets: $35c/55a

Newgrass Ninjas: 18-time Grammy winners Béla Fleck & The Flecktones at VPAC Saturday night

Béla Fleck & The Flecktones have long been icons in their genre. It's no surprise then that when they decided to release a Christmas album, they rocked that genre as well, winning a Grammy for Jingle All the Way.

They take the stage at the Vilar Center Saturday night with "The Holiday Tour," playing songs from the Grammy-winning album including a sparkling banjo-harmonic arrangement of “Christmas Time is Here,” a fiery rendition of “Sleigh Ride” as well as classic Flecktones favorites.

Tickets are still available for the show, but we recommend you buy early - Béla Fleck & The Flecktones sold out the theatre a few years back, and will probably do the same this year. Buy your tickets online, or call 888.920.ARTS(2787) to purchase through the box office.

“Jingle All the Way does what all great Christmas records ought to - keep the essence of the underlying songs while bringing out something new and unexpected to make them fresh and worth another listen.” – Associated Press

Renée Fleming: A Gala Concert to Benefit the VPAC February 26

The VPAC announced this week that a very special show has been added to the winter 09-10 lineup. Soprano superstar Renée Fleming will perform a gala concert to benefit the theatre on February 26. The entire $150 ticket price is a contribution to the VPAC.

Ms. Felming is considered one of the great ambassadors of the performing arts. She regularly performs on the world's greatest opera stages and in 2008, a precedent was broken when Ms. Fleming became the first woman in the 125-year history of the Metropolitan Opera to headline an opening night gala.

As a musical statesman, Renée Fleming has been sought after for numerous distinguished occasions, from the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony to performances in Beijing during the 2008 Olympic Games. On January 18, 2009, she performed for the televised "We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration" at the Lincoln Memorial concert for President Obama.

Her performance in the intimate, 530-seat Vilar Center is a landmark occasion. Tickets are on sale now online or by calling 888.920.ARTS(2787).

360 Degree SlopeViews Birds of Prey Build Out

The Vail Valley Foundation's newest Birds of Prey Partner SlopeViews created an immersive time lapse video showing the construction of the finish area stadium for the Audi Birds of Prey World Cup. To our knowledge, this is the first time immersive video has been used at a World Cup skiing event.

Immersive video allows the viewer to control their field of view simply by clicking and dragging their mouse to look around during playback, providing an interactive, photorealistic, point-of-view experience. No other video platform puts the viewer in the director’s chair with the power to control their field of view. Whether it’s covering World Cup ski racing, filming a concert or providing an interactive video display of your products, SlopeViews captures the energy and places the viewer in the middle of the excitement.

Stay tuned for more immersive video of the Birds of Prey from the team at SlopeViews. The team worked throughout the races capturing hours and hours of footage for a final 360 degree Birds of Prey experience. Check back in the next couple weeks for a World Cup ski racing first... fully interactive 360 video from the Audi Birds of Prey.

In the meantime... click below to watch the building of the Birds of Prey finish area.

Zach and Reggie Crist are both former members of the US Ski Team and gained world renown acclaim as pioneers of Skier Cross (SX). Reggie is the first two-time SX gold medal winner at the X Games and Zach has won gold, silver and bronze. The brothers evolved from athletes to guides as a natural progression by taking their skiing to the heights of the big mountains of Alaska, New Zealand and the Himalaya.

Thank you Talon Crew!

Check out a short video shot yesterday of the Talon Crew working to change out the Super Combined course from Downhill To Slalom.

The Talon Crew is amongst the most respected World Cup race crews in the world. Each year the Vail Valley Foundation utilizes approximately 200 volunteers each day during the Birds of Prey Race Week. This volunteer race corps, deemed the "Talon Crew" racks up a daunting 25,000 hours of volunteer service each year for the Birds of Prey. That works out to be roughly 1041 days or 2.8 years of service each year. Our sincere thanks goes out to the Talon Crew... without them the Birds of Prey would not be possible.

Lindsey Vonn Interview from Lake Louise

Vail Resorts photo by Jack Affleck

Congrats go out to Linsdey Vonn following here first place downhill finish yesterday in Lake Louise. Wish her and the rest of the U.S. ladies luck today in another downhill and the Super G tomorrow.

Today's downhill run is the fifth consecutive day of downhill for these girls. Yep, the first training run was last Tuesday. It's autopilot for Lindsey, but the other girls have found the line too.

Six Downhill wins in five years for LV, nuff said here. Only yesterday's win was cool as she showed her teeth and left some blood on the course after kneeing herself in the jaw while tucking over a bump. Yes, she is tougher than you. We don't even pretend.

LINDSEY VONN INTERVIEW FROM LAKE LOUISE:

Downhill Notes - U.S. Ski Team

Each day we get a bit of inspiration for our U.S. Ski Team members from their Alpine Press Officer Doug Haney. Check out today's words below and join us in Beaver Creek for the Men's Downhill at 11am. It's going to be a packed house so get here early, stake your claim in the finish stadium and enjoy your only opportunity to see the U.S. Men's Ski Team on U.S. soil.

Complete Audi Birds of Prey information can be found HERE.

FROM DOUG:

As Baby Huey famously said two winter's ago, "It's game day at home!"
He was amping a young Andrew Weibrecht in the start house at the Birds of Prey downhill - the downhill, America's downhill. If you don't know Huey (AKA Peter Lavin), watch Weibrecht's 2007 run again and hang on. It's going to be a ripper again this year at Birds.

ANDREW WEIBRECHT 2007 BOP DOWNHILL:

The War Horse started 48th in yesterday's super combined, and skied to fifth in the downhill portion. He's been in a zone since opening the speed season in Lake Louise last week with two outstanding results. Somewhere in Portillo, Chile this summer he found the flow, found the fall line and found out how to control the immense amount of speed his cannon ball body creates. Hell yes - keep an eye on bib 47 today.

Bode also skied a pretty sweet downhill yesterday landing seventh with ease and he was trucking in the slalom portion before drilling a hole on the flats and taking a dive. Good news is he's fine and fired up to get back in the gate today for the downhill, a race he's won twice and finished second in once. It was cool to see him race yesterday, no matter where we are in the world, the crowd goes absolutely mental when Bode is on course. He's No 8 for the U.S. Ski Team and will be relaying all the goods up to the other boys at the top.

The Marco Rocks Fan Club rolled into town Thursday night and won't stop partying until sometime tomorrow. Expect things to get loud when Sully rolls out of the gate in bib 27. Go get your own green hat, those things are like gold at the Beav.

THE MARCO ROCKS FAN CLUB AT THE 2008 BOP:

Nyman's up to bat next with 28. For only being on snow something like six weeks, Nyman has been skiing really well in training at Beaver Creek. He likes things with flow and Birds is just that, from rolling flats, to perilous steeps to high speed turns and big jumps, it has it all and Steven makes it look good.

Take a hike with him, he'll tell you about it:

Mac, Fish and Worm are also in the box. Mac's back and is already ahead of where he was last year after returning from injury. Fish is a total freight train. He scored his first WC points here last season and hasn't looked back and Worm has all the skills to make it happen here too.

Universal Sports is firing this thing up LIVE online at 11 a.m. MT, then our good friends at NBC will be on the air with the polished DH package Sunday at noon MT. They do interviews, hang with the Team, it's cool.

Onward,

Doug Haney

A recap from Downhill Training Today

Today was a classic case of “hurry up and wait” as the world’s best skiers convened in Beaver Creek for the opening day of Downhill training for the 2009 Audi Birds of Prey World Cup Race Week.

Originally slated for an 11 a.m. start, the training run finally got underway at 1:45 p.m. as a winter storm rolled in to the Vail Valley, depositing approximately six inches of new snow on the racecourse.

Beaver Creek race crews and Birds of Prey volunteers worked through the morning and early afternoon to get the track ready for racing.

Switzerland’s Ambrosi Hoffmann captured the “abbreviated” run with a time of 49.07 as the training run started mid-way down the course due to soft snow on top. The time proved to be one-one hundredth of a second faster than teammate Ralf Kreuzer and two-one hundredths ahead of France’s Yannick Bertrand in third.

Top American on the day was Lake Placid’s Andrew Weibrecht, who finished in a sixth-place tie with Sweden’s Patrik Jaerbyn, while Erik Fisher finished eighth, Marco Sullivan in a tie for tenth and Scott MaCartney in 24th. Bode Miller finished 47th in the shortened session.

The second day of training is scheduled for tomorrow at 11 a.m., with the opening event of the weekend’s races, the Super Combined, on tap for Friday.

It’s hard not to be over dramatic as the world’s top ski racers assemble in Beaver Creek for the 2009 Audi Birds of Prey World Cup Race Week.

No, we’re not talking about the fact that it’s an Olympic year. We’re talking about the fact that Austria’s Hermann Maier will not be in the starting gate for the first time since the course debuted in 1997.

Of course, there was the year he missed rehabbing from the motorcycle injury that nearly claimed his leg and almost his life, but that was different. We don’t think anyone, other than a doctor or two, had any doubts that Hermann would be back.

Now, that is no longer the case. On October 13, Hermann Maier officially retired from ski racing, following 13 years on the “White Circus”.

“Hermann Maier WAS ski racing to an entire generation of skiers,” explained Michael Imhof, Vice President of Sales and Operations for the Vail Valley Foundation, “not just in Austria, but around the world. He literally helped us put Birds of Prey on the international radar screen and we owe him a resounding and heartfelt ‘thank you’. It will be very hard to look at that first Downhill Training start list and know his name will not be on it. On behalf of all of us in the Vail Valley, I wish him the absolute best for his life after ski racing.”

From a rather inauspicious beginning, that included being sent home from the Schladming Ski Academy and told he would not succeed because of his slight stature, the “Herminator” would build not only his body as a brick layer in his native Flachau, but also a career record that would include four overall World Cup titles, two Olympic gold medals, three World Championship crowns and 54 individual World Cup wins.

For American race fans, Birds of Prey WAS Hermann’s racecourse. He won a record number of eight times in Beaver Creek, with six World Cup victories and a pair of 1999 World Championships gold medals. His Championships gold medal tie in Super-G with Norway’s Lasse Kjus marked the first time the FIS World Championships had featured a first place tie.

His presence, along with his victories, brought Hollywood to the races and to Beaver Creek as The Terminator (California Governor Arnold Scharzenegger) shared the podium with The Herminator at the 1999 World Championships. He would serve as a forerunner and official starter for the opening time trial of the 100th anniversary of the Tour de France that kicked off at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.

In fact, he got so used to attending the winner’s press conference in Beaver Creek that he did not require an escort. He just knew where to go after the awards.

But perhaps his greatest victory was returning to competition following the near-fatal motorcycle accident in August of 2001 that nearly claimed his lower leg. Forced to miss the entire 2002 season, Maier shocked the ski world when he captured a Super-G win in Kitzbuhel just two weeks after returning to competition in January of 2003.

Just last winter, Maier was in the hunt once again in the Birds of Prey Super-G, finishing in second position, just 45-hundredths of a second behind eventual World Cup Overall Champion Aksel Lund Svindal.

“We will miss the Maier ‘glare’ in the Birds of Prey starting gate,” offered Imhof. “We will miss the fire and determination that he brought to each and every race. But we will also remember ‘the gate’ in the 1999 World Championships that Hermann basically destroyed with a line much straighter than any of his competitors dared take. And, we will remember his flawless flight off Golden Eagle in that same race, en route to gold”. Hermann Maier has undoubtedly left his mark on Birds of Prey and hopefully, Birds of Prey holds a special place in The Herminator’s heart. We have no doubt that we will see Hermann again, perhaps as a spectator, perhaps as a Legend’s competitor in the American Ski Classic. But as the late Bob Hope would croon, “Thanks for the memories”.
