The 2009 Teva Raft Cross

The Teva Raft Cross at the Teva Mountain Games has always been a crowd favorite. Full of carnage, swimmers, contact and a few surprises this particular event does not disappoint.
This rafting event (two person catarafts) places teams of two head-to-head on Gore Creek in race pods of no more than three teams at one time. The concept is simple, the first team to navigate the 1/10 of a mile course from the Covered Bridge to the International Bridge, including no less than two upstream gates, advances to the next round or takes the top spot on the podium. Keep in mind that contact is allowed and is inevitable.
The 2009 event took a turn towards the unexpected early on resulting in something that has people who witnessed the event talking about it to this day. An unfortunate team ended up in the drink, but their raft never left the "hole." It became apparent early on that removing the raft from the sticky hole was not going to be an easy task.
Enter John Mark Seelig. A competitor for team Whiskey Jacks and owner of the local rafting outfit Lakota Guides, John took it upon himself to solve the problem. Check out the video below to see his creative, and gutsy solution.
For the record, we as the event organizers must state that doing what was done in the video below is not something we endorse, and we will strive to prevent in the future. However, John Mark is one quick dude and by the time he made up his mind... we could not stop him. For anyone wondering if it really happened... it did, and here is the proof.
