A journey that started out with an historic three-race victory streak in Beaver Creek last December ended Thursday evening in Austria as Switzerland’s Carlo Janka was honored as the “Skieur d’ Or” (Golden Skier) by the members of the International Association of Ski Journalists (AIJS).
In addition to his Beaver Creek heroics, the Swiss, nicknamed "Iceman" by some of his colleagues due to his cool and strong demeanor, captured the Olympic gold medal in Giant Slalom in Vancouver, while also earning the season-long Overall World Cup crystal globe.
Janka is the 34th ski racer to receive the award since it’s creation by World Cup co-founder Serge Lang in 1963 and the first Swiss winner of the Skieur d’ Or since 1995. Last year’s award winner was Vail’s Lindsey Vonn, who finished second in the balloting this year.
Janka and the Swiss men will return to Beaver Creek December 3-5 for the Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup races, with the 2010 Birds of Prey playing host to a Downhill, Super-G and Giant Slalom competitions.
