Live, Everclear and Leigh Nash Rock the VPAC

On Monday night (February 1st) we present Open Wing Broke Strings at the Vilar Performing Arts Center, an evening of acoustic music featuring Leigh Nash of Sixpence None The Richer, Eddie Kowalczyk of Live and Art Alexakis of Everclear.

This is a chance to see these three lead singers in a very intimate and personal way.

Eddie Kowalczyk (Live) describes it as "stripped down, intimate and acoustic, you’ll hear the strings on the guitar vibrate and buzz, the vocal chords hum and pulsate as the songs you love come to life like you never knew they could."

Each of these artists has achieved a level of critical success that has put them in front of large audiences with lots of support. But for the OWBS tour, they go back to their roots with no backup musicians, minimal production and no bells and whistles. It's the way many artist start out their careers - in smoky bars and coffee houses. Without all the trappings, it's really about the quality of the songwriting and the honesty of the vocals. These three artists should give us a healthy dose of both.

Leigh Nash's heavenly voice is imprinted on our brains from Sixpence's hit songs like “Kiss Me” and “There She Goes.”

Her original musical inspiration came from classic country heroines Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline and Tanya Tucker, and she returns to these Christian and country roots on her solo album Blue on Blue.

On Monday night we’ll experience Leigh, alone onstage with her guitar, and we get shivers just imaging how spiritual she will sound in our intimate venue, singing the songs we know by heart along with her solo work – all of it an upbeat celebration of the good things in life.

Art Alexakis, lead singer and songwriter of Everclear, took the disappointments and tragedies of his life and wrote intensely personal songs about them. These songs spoke to a generation of fans, and this concert will give us a chance to hear the stories behind his biggest hits including “Father of Mine,” “Wonderful,” “Santa Monica” and “AM Radio.”

Eddie Kowalczyk is the driver of this concert concept. He will strip down Live’s greatest hits like “Lightning Crashes,” “I Alone,” “All Over You,” “Lakini’s Juice” and “Heaven.” These are great songs with durable lyrics that reflect Kowalczyk’s personal and spiritual concerns.

If you're looking for a thoughtful evening of great music and stories we encourage you to come and spend the night with these songwriters.

Enjoy a collection of songs from Live, Everclear and Leigh Nash below. Tickets are still available for this performance and can be purchased HERE.

2010 Teva Mountain Games Registration OPEN!

8 Ball Kayak at the 2009 Teva Mountain Games
Photo (C) 2009 Shane Macomber

Registration for the 2010 Teva Mountain Games is officially OPEN! The 2010 Teva Mountain Games are slated for June 3-6.

It's always strange for us here at the Vail Valley Foundation to be working on summer in winter. Today from the VVF's Avon office the Eagle River is barely visible through drifts of snow and ice. Come June rivers here will be thumping as outdoor enthusiasts from around the world flock to the Vail Valley for what has become the nation's largest celebration of mountain sport, soul and culture.

We encourage all you competitors out there to get a head-start as many of the competitions at the 2010 Teva Mountain Games will reach capacity. Events like the Costa 2 Fly X-Stream and Bud Light Lime Steep Creek Championships presented by Thule will cap early. Others like Citizen's Bouldering presented by Pyramide also inevitably sell out leaving some would-be competitors wishing they had registered early. Lastly, by registering online, instead of on-site you will save yourself some coin.

CLICK HERE TO REGISTER for all events at the 2010 Teva Mountain Games. If you dig a little, you might even find a few new events we have not even officially announced yet.

To get you amped on the 2010 Teva Mountain Games check out the short promo below. CLICK HERE for more photos and video from the Teva Mountain Games.

Support the Arts Reaching Students Today!

The Griffin Theatre Company Presents Andrew Clements' Frindle TODAY!

The STARS (Support The Arts Reaching Students) series of performances at the Vilar Performing Arts Center is offered to promote artistic, educational and cultural enrichment to local students with in-school workshops and daytime shows at the theatre. Each year, the Vilar Performing Arts Center provides free transportation and tickets to more than 4,000 Eagle and Lake County students to expose them to the thrill of live performing arts.

Today's STARS performance is The Griffin Theatre Company Presents Andrew Clements' Frindle. For anyone interested, tickets are still available and can be purchased HERE for both of today's performances (10am & 12:30pm).

Each STARS performance at the Vilar Center includes a Study Guide. These guides provide valuable insight for teachers prior to their arrival at the Theatre. Each includes insights into the performance, curriculum connections, vocabulary words and other details designed to make these performances not only fun, but, also educational. Check out today's study guide for Frindle HERE.

We've posted a few short videos below from STARS performances earlier this season. You can check out the entire 2009-2010 season HERE. As with all things Vail Valley Foundation, we could not bring programs like this to our schools without the support from our donors. To support STARS, please CLICK HERE.

Chee-Yun & Friends: A Benefit Concert at the VPAC

Wednesday night marks a special occasion at the Vilar Center. Violin virtuoso Chee-Yun and other special musical guests will take the VPAC stage for a concert to benefit the June S. Kang Love of the Arts Scholarship Fund.

The Fund was established in memory of June Kang, a longtime local, and helps to support youth in the Vail Valley pursuing an education in the arts.
