The Slalom run of Men's combined

Kristina Koznick with the snow angels at the finish of the men's GS

Throughout our 2 weeks here in Whistler, we've had a steady stream of past Olympians and Olympic medalists, but tonight was our first time with an Olympian who had their medal with them! Kathy Kreiner is one of only a handful of Canadian women who have medaled in alpine skiing and we were honored to have her and her sister drop by the Vail House tonight. Cathy had her gold medal with her, which she won in the 1976 Innsbruck Olympics in the Super G.

And while we've been here for quite awhile now, tonight was our first chance to really visit the other nations houses. Now that Sheika is "in the house' literally, we made stops to the Austrian, Italian and Swiss houses.Special thanks to Martin Berthod, our competitor with St. Moritz, who bought our dinner at the Swiss house. Martin is truly one of the good guys, and always has been!

Tomorrow we welcome our many friends from Canada to a special night at the Vail House and we wrap up our adventure here by hosting the members of USSA on Friday- then on to Vancouver on Saturday and back home!

The Vail House is rolling! We had the US men's team by to join us for après the other day and the Vonn family also came and ate some dinner with us. The Spanish contingent stopped by for lunch today and all the Scandinavians are swinging by tonight!

The feel of the Olympics is always so wonderful and worldly! We are glad we have the Vail House for everyone to come together! Lots of progress is being made for the 2015 Beaver Creek/ Vail World Alpine Championships Bid.

Talon Crew Pics of the Day - 2010 Olympics Men's SC

We've posted another round of photos from the Talon Crew and Steve Prawdzki's volunteer efforts at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Once again, Steve does not disappoint while delivering some fantastic photos of Bode Miller's Gold Medal run today.

The Talon Crew is the volunteer corps at the annual Birds of Prey World Cup Race Week here in Beaver Creek.

Photos and words below Steve Prawdzki.

SUNDAY FEB. 21, 2010
Each Olympics creates it's own story and moments in sports history. The 2010 Olympics are no exception as the story developing here in Whistler is the competition between heroes Bode Miller (USA) and Aksel Lund Svindal (NOR). This is a bit of a surprise, as I would have expected the Swiss to dominate the podium, and they haven't. Today was all about Bode, as he cemented his place in hearts of his fans, and in Olympic history.

Today was also a challenging day for the Gate Judges as we have two races on the same day on different parts of the course. To add to the challenge of the day, we had an early race start, at 9:30 am, in order to accommodate the TV audience in Europe, and to beat the sun effect on the slalom run.

I did early load again. We put up the gate panels in the dark, cycled down for our morning organizational meeting at the bottom, and then quickly back to the top to get in place for the Downhill portion of today's race. The excitement was high with the Gate Judges and we really worked well together. We have a veteran team assembled and they all knew what there job was and where to go to, and got in place on time. The frantic part comes after the Downhill when we have to cycle down the course and get replaced for the Slalom in a very short period of time. We pulled it off thanks to our great Crew Chief, Murray Wood, just barely getting in place before the start.

Enjoy the pics. Monday is a day off as the women take over the track. Our team will be on the hill putting up gates for the Giant Slalom which we race on Tues.

FRIDAY, FEB. 19, 2010
Another fabulous day in Whistler. Bluebird sky and a fast track that was prepared to perfection. And another big day for America as we put two of our boys on the podium. Bode Miller took the Silver Metal and Andrew Weibrecht the Bronze Metal, by a margin of only .03 seconds (about 4 inches).

Enjoy the pics, they pretty much tell the story of the day.....

Talk to you soon....

Talon Crew Pics Of the Day - 2010 Olympic Women's Downhill

Many members of the Talon Crew, the volunteer corps from the Birds of Prey, have been putting in some quality time working for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and the surrounding area. Regarded as one of the hardest working crews on the Men's World Cup circuit, we are always thankful for their dedicated service and unparalleled work ethic each year here in Beaver Creek. Apparently the daunting 25,000 hours of volunteer service they rack up each year for the Birds of Prey is just not enough.

We are a little delayed in posting some of the photos below, however, we think it was worth the wait.

For more information on the Talon Crew, please CLICK HERE.

Special thanks goes out to Steve Prawdzik for sharing the photos and words below.

WED. FEB. 17, 2010:
Wow, what an amazing day in Whistler. Today was all about the women as they took center stage with their downhill. It was a beautiful sunny day and the temperature stayed cold all day. The track was well prepared and fast. It was a perfect day for a downhill with a perfect ending. Vail's own Lindsey Vonn took the gold and Julia Mancuso took the silver in the Women's Downhill. The home town girl scored big, and I was there to see it all.

The Men's Gate Judges were off today except of the gate crew. We only had light duty, just moving some poles around the course in preparation for tomorrow. After our second pass down the Men's course, we were shut off from the bottom and ended up watching the Women's Downhill from the top of their slalom start. We watched the American women race by and could hear the roar from the stadium below, knowing something big had happened.

After a quick stop at the Weasel House, I went to Whistler Village and was able to score a ticket to the Victory Ceremony. I joined Murray and Suzie Wood in their celebration of Whistler's own Maelle Ricker taking the Gold in Snowboarding. She is the first female Canadian to win Olympic Gold on home soil. A really big day as well for the Whistler community.

Bid committee members Rod Slifer, Hank Tauber & Erik Borgen in the Vail House

The first official Vail House dinner took place last night in Vancouver for the 2015 Beaver Creek/ Vail World Alpine Ski Championships Bid. It was created by Executive Chef Tim McCaw of Zach’s Cabin in Beaver Creek. He prepared a mixed green salad with candied pecans, gorgonzola and white balsamic vinaigrette. Our main dish is Chicken Piccata with mashed potatoes and rapini (he also calls it aspiration). And for dessert, white chocolate and toffee bread pudding!

Chef Tim McCaw cooking up some aspiration for the Vail House

The house was full of ski legends! Dave Irwin and Steve Podborski enjoyed après and dinner, as well as, the NBC crew, Tim Ryan, Todd Brooker and Steve Porino. Aksel Lund Svindal's father also stopped by the house yesterday following Svindal's silver medal finish in the Men's Downhill.

Talon Crew Pics Of The Day - 2010 Olympic Men's Downhill

There is no rest for the Talon Crew, the Birds of Prey volunteer corps partly responsible for making the Birds of Prey here in Beaver Creek one of the best courses on the Men's World Cup circuit. Enjoy the photos and words below by Steve Prawdzki. Steve and other members of the Talon Crew are up in Whistler volunteering for the 2010 Winter Olympics. We are sure the Canadians are thankful for their hard work while we are thankful for the beautiful photos below!

MONDAY, FEB. 15, 2010
The BIG day has finally arrived. The skies have cleared and the temperature is cold. The course crew worked literally through the night and did a remarkable job preparing the course. We loaded the gondola at 5:30 and did our moring gate chores. Back to the bottom for a quick Gate Judge's meeting and then in place on course.. Today is all about the athletes. You can feel the energy, everybody is stoked. It's show time!

After the race we received some free tickets to the Whistler Victory Ceremony at the Whistler Medals Plaza, right behind my lodge. What a thrill to see an awards ceremony in person. The atmosphere was electric. The stadium they built for the awards was incredible. I hope you saw me, I was on live TV when they panned to the crowd scene.

Way to go Bode!

Tomorrow is the Super Combined, another big day for the Gate Judges, and another early load.

Vancouver 2010 - Dispatch 1

Dave Irwin, Lynne, Heidi and Chef Tim all enjoying the fact that the men’s DH is finally about to begin!

The Olympic Games are up and running, and so is the Vail House! A contingent from the Vail Valley is up in Whistler at the 2010 Olympic Games campaigning for the Beaver Creek/ Vail 2015 World Alpine Ski Championships Bid.

After warm weather, rain and wind kept the Alpine events from starting up in Whistler this past weekend, things finally got underway today.

It is going to make for a busy week of racing for the athletes and spectators alike!

The Vail House team is prepping for their first house dinner tonight. There will be about 40 people in attendance and I am sure the atmosphere will be great after Bode Millers bronze medal finish today in the Downhill!

Go USA!

A Week of Opera at the VPAC

Teatro Lirico D'Europa presents Die Fledermaus at the VPAC on 2.21.10

This week is full of cultural excellence at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek. Opera 101, a free event, kicks things off this Wednesday, February 17 at 6:30pm.

Kris Sabel, Executive Director of the Vilar Performing Arts Center, will host the complimentary “Opera 101” Seminar for an evening offering an introduction to each opera that will be performed by Teatro Lirico D’Europa on Saturday, February 20 and Sunday, February 21.

Opera 101 will offer insight and background on both operas performed this weekend: Verdi’s La Traviata and Strauss’ Die Fledermaus (pictured here).

“Opera 101 is an event that we have been doing for years, with great success,” says Vilar Center Executive Director Kris Sabel.” “It’s an excellent opportunity for opera experts, as well as those new to opera to enhance their knowledge and enjoyment of what they are about to see.”
Though often considered traditional, opera is in fact one of the fastest growing of all performing arts, attracting audiences of all ages.

“Opera speaks to very basic emotions that everyone can relate to,” Sabel says. “Common themes of love, hate, loss, jealousy, passion and death are all portrayed in opera performances.”
Sabel said that the motivation behind the annual “Opera 101” discussion is to review the plot, get to know the characters and gain insight into the history of the two operas presented the following weekend.

“There’s such a richness and depth of plot in opera,” Sabel explains. “There are often complicated relationships, conflicted characters and many layers of storyline. The point of Opera 101 is to arm the audience with a background of the story, the history, the people portrayed in each evening. It really helps people to connect on an even deeper level when they see the drama unfold on the Vilar Center stage.”

Following the Opera 101 seminar, Teatro Lirico D’Europa will perform two very different operas at the Vilar Center: Verdi’s La Traviata on Saturday, February 20 at 6:30pm and Strauss’ Die Fledermaus on Sunday, February 21 at 6:30pm.

La Traviata details the ill-fated love affair between a young gentlemen and a terminally ill courtesan. The opera’s delicate blend of old and new styles has kept it ever fresh and appealing in modern opera houses. The story has all the traditional trappings of opera: passion, tragedy, love and death.

Die Fledermaus is a witty, melodious and charmingly frivolous comedy that revolves around practical jokes, faked identities, long-deliberated revenge and the power of champagne. Light-hearted and full of hilarious irony, Die Fledermaus will have the audience swaying in their seats along with the champagne-infused characters of the opera.

“These are such drastically different operas,” Sabel says. “It’s a great opportunity to go from a romantic tragedy to a lighthearted comedy in the space of two evenings. The two performances also show the incredible range of Teatro Lirico D’Europa. They are truly world-class opera artists, and they prove that Saturday and Sunday when they perform two such different storylines.”

The Opera 101 seminar is completely free of charge, and is open to the public. The discussion will get underway in the May Gallery of the Vilar Performing Arts Center, adjacent to the lobby, at 6:30pm on Wednesday evening.

Tickets for La Traviata and Die Fledermaus can be found HERE.

Enjoy some photos below from Steve Prawdzki. Steve and a handful of other Talon Crew volunteers are in Whistler volunteering for the 2010 Olympic Games.

The Talon Crew is the volunteer corps for the annual Birds of Prey World Cup Race Week here in Beaver Creek. They rack up a mind boggling 25,000 hours of volunteer service each year here. Without them, the Birds of Prey Would not be what it is today.

We hope to post some more photos from Steve and the Talon Crew over the coming weeks.

Thanks for sharing Steve. Photos and words below courtesy Steve Prawdzki.

SATURDAY, FEB. 13, 2010
I am up at 4:00 am with much anticipation, and make my way to Creekside for a 5:00 am load. I arrive on time only to find out, as I had expected, that the race was postponed. What a big disappointment for everyone, we really wanted to get the Men's Downhill off as scheduled. The race has been rescheduled until Monday. There was just too much rain and it's still way too warm. With more rain in the forecast and the freezing level rising to 1600 meters (top of the course), this was the only decision that could be made.

After a brief meeting, we head over to Murray's house to have coffee and plan the rest of our day. We decide to meet in Whistler Village and check out the scene there. We meet around mid day and the village is teaming with activity and the energy level was high. The pics pretty much say it all.......

Sunday is a day off for the Men's Crew as we turn the course over to the women. We are planning on free skiing and being spectators.
