Celebrate The Beat To End School Year With A Bang With Free VPAC Performance

A school year’s worth of work will be on display Tuesday, May 4, as nearly 120 Avon Elementary School students take the Vilar Performing Arts Center stage by storm to showcase their skills in the Celebrate the Beat “End-Of-The-Year” performance.

Free of charge and slated for a 6 p.m. start, the “End-Of-The-Year” performance will feature students from grades 3 to 5 in a variety of musical and dance offerings.

First introduced to Vail in 2007 by Vail International Dance Festival director Damian Woetzel and CTB Artistic Director Tracy Straus as a free Dance Festival educational offering for local children, Celebrate the Beat introduces the students to music, dance, art and self expression, using the award-winning and inspirational National Dance Institute teaching techniques created by Jacques d’Amboise and his staff.

In addition to the one-week program conducted during the Dance Festival, Celebrate the Beat was incorporated into the annual curriculum for third to fifth grade students at Avon Elementary School in 2008, while also having a presence in six other valley-wide elementary schools.

Town Of Vail Community Planning Office Manager Rolls Away From Final Bud Light Street Beat With 2011 Volvo C-30 Grand Prize

Vail’s Lynne Campbell may have never wanted to hear a phone ring more than she did Wednesday evening in the heart of Vail Village as the Office Manager for the Town of Vail’s Community Development department stood on stage at Check Point Charlie as a finalist for the season-long Bud Light Street Beat Grand Prize, a 2011 Volvo C-30 sedan.

Campbell and Julie Kresko of Edwards were the final two contestants left standing for the 2010 version of the annual Volvo Grand Prize giveaway at the free concert series after six other local contestants had been eliminated. Each of the eight contestants had picked a Cricket Wireless cell phone from a bag and, as each cell phone rang, another unlucky contestant left the stage until just the two women remained.

Campbell, who was drawn as an alternate to round out the field of eight contestants, also earned the right to remove the last squares from the board that revealed which number cell phone would be dialed. She then held the phone to her ear, perhaps praying for the call, and it was answered, both literally and figuratively.

“I’ve never won anything like this before,” gushed a giddy Campbell, wanting to ensure that everyone knew that she did not work “directly” for Vail Mayor Dick Cleveland, one of the evening’s dignitaries. “I won a t-shirt at a radio station once, but nothing like this.”

Campbell did give herself a better than average chance to qualify as a contestant, registering at seven of the eight Bud Light Street Beat free concerts throughout the winter.

In addition to the Volvo Grand Prize Giveaway, the evening’s festivities also included a Michael Jackson costume contest, which 8-year-old Mack Salmon of Avon captured hands down, courtesy of a black sequined jacket, silver sequined shirt, silver sequined socks, and of course, the single sequined glove, not to mention some solid MJ moves.
The evening featured a Jackson theme, with music for the final Bud Light Street Beat free concert provided by DJ Logic and Thriller.

Volvo Giveaway Tonight MJ Style!

Tonight is the night! Don't miss the last Bud Light Street Beat of the season with DJ Logic and friends as they pay homage to the King of Pop with a feel-good, dance-the-night-away FREE CONCERT. Come dressed as Michael Jackson for a chance to win a pair of Head Monster skis. Tonight is also the night the Grand Prize 2011 Volvo C30 will be given away to one local with a valid ID. Second Magic Bus Ready To Hit The Road This Month

The wheels on the bus will soon literally go round and round as the second Magic Bus, a mobile pre-kindergarten readiness "vehicle" will hit the road throughout the Vail Valley this month.

The Magic Bus program, funded by the Vail Valley Foundation and facilitated by The Youth Foundation, provides pre-kindergarten-aged children with the opportunity to discover the wonders of learning about their world, while also encouraging creative expression and nuturing natural curiosity.

Research into school success shows a direct link to the preparation that young children receive from the time they are born until they enter kindergarten. Children who have the opportunity to engage in stimulating cognitive activities and nurturing social-emotional relationships are already ahead of their peers when they enter kindergarten.

The Vail Valley Foundation initially launched the Magic Bus program in the late 1990's, consisting of a mobile library van that visited preschool centers throughout the valley in an effort to increase the literacy rates for Eagle County children. The program was revamped to focus on pre-kindergarten readiness in 2006.

The Foundation was able to retrofit the second Magic Bus, an 18-passenger people mover donated by the Beaver Creek Resort Company, courtesy of a generous grant from Vail Resorts. The seats were removed and the interior turned into a mobile classroom.

For additional information on the Magic Bus program or other Vail Valley Foundation education initiatives, visit http://www.vvf.org/.

Only two shows remain as part of the 2010 Bud Light Street Beat free concert series. If you haven't been yet, GET OUT THERE! What's better than free live music? This is the only show in the series to be held at The Arrabelle at Vail Square (Lionshead).

Where: The Arrabelle at Vail Square
When: Wednesday, April 7 at 6pm
More: www.streetbeatconcerts.com or 888.883.VAIL(8245)

The Los Angeles Times declared, “Cotton brings a freshness to the soul-rock formula, not to mention a contagious fervor that is near irresistible.” Danielia Cotton turns up the volume with her style of music. A compelling mix of soul and folk, blue and jazz, and a whole lot of emotionally powerful, no-nonsense rock and roll.
