Körbes has performed here in Vail many times for the Festival and we are excited to see her tomorrow night in Pacific Northwest Ballet's Ballet Masterworks performance at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater.

Carla Körbes Returns to Vail
* Interview courtesy Pointe Magazine and the ClubPointe e-newsletter.

Pacific Northwest Ballet principal Carla Körbes is a veteran of the Vail International Dance Festival. This year she returns to dance both with PNB and in the star-studded International Evenings of Dance galas. ClubPointe spoke with Körbes shortly before she left for Vail.

Which PNB ballets are you excited to perform this year?
I can't wait to do the Waltz Girl in Serenade, which is one of those roles I dreamed about for ages and finally got to perform with PNB this past season. I'm also making my debut in Duo Concertant. I remember watching it over and over when I was with New York City Ballet.

How about at the International Evenings of Dance?
Robbie Fairchild from NYCB and I will dance together for the first time, which is something I love about Vail: Usually at galas like this the couples are from the same company, but Damian Woetzel likes to mix us up. We're dancing the White Swan pas de deux. Actually, I'm dancing Black Swan with PNB, too--I'll basically do all of Swan Lake while I'm there! And I'm also doing the Agon pas de deux with Eric Underwood. We went to school together at SAB, so it'll be nice to see him again.

Many dancers have said that Vail is a kind of homecoming for them. Who else are you looking forward to seeing?
It is a big reunion! Especially since I've been dancing at Vail for so long--it really does feel like coming home. I'm excited to reconnect with the people I used to work with, like Wendy Whelan and Joaquin de Luz. But I'm always excited to meet new people, too--like Tiler Peck, who I think is fantastic.

How is performing at the Vail amphitheater different from performing back in Seattle?
There's something about dancing outside. You feel connected to nature: The setting is so beautiful, and the air is so fresh. I feel alive onstage at Vail.

CTB Rehearsals 7.26.10 - Photo by Caitlin Kakigi

While some of the world’s best dancers are busy rehearsing on the stage at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater, future dancers participating in the Celebrate the Beat (CTB) program are actively perfecting their dance moves, too.

The opening act for the Pacific Northwest Ballet’s Broadway, Ballet & Beyond performance on Sunday, August 1 at 7:30pm will feature a special performance by the Vail Valley’s CTB dancers.
CTB summer camp participants have busily been rehearsing every day for a week to prepare for the debut of their performance on Sunday evening. As the opening act for the Pacific Northwest Ballet, the CTB performance will feature dance and movement to classical Broadway tunes from Oliver, The Wiz, West Side Story and Chorus Line.

The Vail Valley Foundation’s CTB program works with local children to elicit a personal standard of excellence by using dance as the medium to teach participants that energy, discipline, hard work, commitment and joyful concentration can lead to success.

CTB was founded in 2000 by Tracy Straus, is inspired by the techniques of the award-winning National Dance Institute (NDI). Straus began mastering the NDI method under founder, Jacques d’Amboise teaching in public schools throughout New York City. All CTB Teaching Artists are professional dancers, choreographers, musicians and composers, all of whom believe that the arts should be an integral part of every child's education.

Live Music And New Orchestra Pit Welcome Pacific Northwest Ballet To Dance Festival Saturday

Dancers of Pacific Northwest Ballet perform Serenade. Choreography by George Balanchine. © The George Balanchine Trust. Photo by Bill Mohn.

Four years ago, Vail International Dance Festival Director Damian Woetzel promised to link live music and dance as a cornerstone of the annual summer festival.

Part of that dream will become reality on Saturday evening, July 31, when the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater’s new orchestra pit will be officially christened as live music welcomes the return of Pacific Northwest Ballet to the Dance Festival for a 7:30 p.m. performance entitled “Ballet Masterworks”.

In addition to the inauguration of the orchestra pit, the evening will feature a trio of classic works, including George Balanchine’s Serenade and Square Dance, along with Ulysses Dove’s Red Angels.

Serenade is a milestone in the history of dance, the first original ballet Balanchine created in America.. The ballet is performed by 28 dancers in blue costumes in front of a blue background. Originating it as a lesson in stage technique, Balanchine worked unexpected rehearsal events into the choreography. When one student fell, he incorporated it. Another day, a student arrived late, and this too became part of the ballet.

In Square Dance, Balanchine joined the traditions of American folk dance with classical ballet. He felt the two types of dance, though widely different in style, had common roots and a similar regard for order.

A visually dramatic, dynamically charged, abstract ballet, Red Angels highlights the dancers' power and athleticism. This piece for four dancers was Dove's first work for New York City Ballet and is a ballet of intense color, sound and sensual impact. Against a jet black curtain, the dancers, dressed in scarlet leotards, are bathed in spots of blinding white or red hot light; the music is a riveting score for electric violin.

Pacific Northwest Ballet is one of America’s largest and most highly regarded ballet companies, presenting more than 100 performances each year of full-length and mixed repertory ballets in Seattle and around the world.

Tickets for Pacific Northwest Ballet’s “Ballet Masterworks” are priced at $55 and $75 for Reserved Amphitheater pavilion seating and $17 for General Admission lawn seating. Tickets for all performances of the 2010 Vail International Dance Festival are available online at www.vaildance.org or by phone at either (970) 845-TIXS (8497) or 888-920-ARTS (2787).

"Local Color" Paints Compelling Portrait Of The Beauty In Life July 31 At The Vilar Center

A renowned artist looks back with loving memories on the summer of his defining year when he befriended an elderly, alcoholic yet genius painter who has turned his back not only on art, but on life. Together, they give one another priceless gifts. The student learns to see the world through the eyes of an artist, while the master remembers how to see past the ugliness in life and once again embrace the beauty.

Two award-winning artists, renowned Hollywood writer/director and painter George Gallo (Midnight Run/Bad Boys) and nationally recognized American painter Don Sahli, will host a special benefit screening of Gallo’s critically acclaimed film, "Local Color," at the Vilar Performing Arts Center Saturday, July 31, at 6 p.m.. The special screening, which benefits the Vilar Center, is being held in conjunction with four days of painting and special events surrounding the 23rd annual Beaver Creek Arts Festival.

Inspired by the true story of Gallo’s own apprenticeship as a young artist, “Local Color” is a compelling film that is opening the eyes and hearts of yet another new generation to the value of mentorship and the joy of seeing the beauty in life.

Tickets for “Local Color” are priced at $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. A special $28 ticket is also available, which includes preferred seating and admission to the Osprey at Beaver Creek Russian Masterworks Backstage Reception following the film.

Mary Chapin Carpenter Brings Her "Age Of Miracles" To The Vilar Center July 29

On her 1992 breakthrough album Come On Come On, Mary Chapin Carpenter sang, "We've got two lives, one we're given, the other one we make." For her, that estimate now seems too conservative.

Chapin Carpenter's current tour, which touches down at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek Thursday evening, July 29, at 8 p.m., will not only reintroduce her much-loved country hits and more recent, yet less familiar, material to audiences, but will also give her the chance to play songs from the critically lauded 2007 recording, The Calling, since, "life interrupted", just as that tour was to get underway.

As the tour, which included a Vilar stop, was just hitting its stride, Carpenter experienced severe chest and back pain. She continued to perform until a bout of breathlessness took her to the emergency room, where she learned she had suffered a pulmonary embolism.

Now, with the April release of her 12th recording, The Age of Miracles, it's not an overstatement to suggest that it's a rebirth --- a third life for her. The album is a personal exploration of regret and resilience, but also a larger, more universal expression of wonder at the times we are living in.

Over the course of her recording career, Carpenter has won five Grammy Awards and sold over 13 million records. She has scored 12 Top 10 singles, including “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” which was nominated for a Record of the Year Grammy Award.

Come On Come On moved Carpenter into the stratosphere of the country music scene. The album went triple platinum, received three Grammy awards, had seven hit singles, and spent two years at the top of the Billboard's charts.

Tickets for Mary Chapin Carpenter are priced at $72 and are available HERE, by phone at 888.920.ARTS(2787) or in person at the Vilar Center box office in Beaver Creek. Tickets are available online 24 hours a day; the box office is open Monday through Friday from 11am-5pm MST, with additional hours on performance days.

The American National Bank ShowDown Town free concert series in Eagle welcomes traditional bluegrass of Badly Bent on Thursday, July 22. The fun gets underway at 6:30pm at Eagle Town Park.

Entrenched in the bluegrass music scene since 1997, Badly Bent has received many accolades and won many competitions including the Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition. While their musical prowess allows them to push the boundaries of traditional music, Badly Bent never strays too far from the roots established by the fathers of bluegrass.

In addition to the great free concert, every ShowDown Town has great kids activities as well. This week's activities include an interactive educational area presented by the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Bud Light Hot Summer Nights To Host Soulful R&B with the Laura Reed Trio

The Bud Light Hot Summer Nights free concert series rolls on with the progressive R&B sound of the Laura Reed Trio. This week's concert will also serve as a celebration for winning the 2015 World Alpine Ski Championships. The fun kicks off at 6:30pm, with gates opening at 5:30pm, at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater in Vail.

Born in South Africa and raised in the American South, Laura Reed uses aspects of both cultures to shape a musical style all her own. A mixture of funk, progressive R&B and pure soul give way to a unique and inspiring live music experience, driven by Reed’s powerful vocals.

In addition to the free concert, don't miss the celebration honoring the Vail Valley Foundation's winning bid for Vail and Beaver Creek to host the 2015 World Alpine Ski Championships. There will be 2015 bumper stickers and balloons, food and drink specials as well as face painting and tattoos for the kids! A pair of skis will also be up for grabs!

This is the last Hot Summer Nights concert before the series goes on a two week hiatus to make way for the Vail International Dance Festival July 27 through August 10. August 10 will serve as a combination of two Vail Valley Foundation events with Hot Summer Nights of Dance and the urban dance stylings of BreakEFX.

ABBA Addicts Unite--Arrival From Sweden Brings Classic Pop Sounds To Vilar Center Monday

It has been 28 years since the Swedish pop band ABBA last performed in public, but it will seem like only yesterday when Arrival From Sweden rekindles the “ABBA Fever” Monday evening, July 19, at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek.

The group is the largest touring ABBA tribute in the world, having performed in over 35 nations around the globe, from Australia to Vietnam. Arrival’s show is also the only one to feature exclusive rights to create exact versions of ABBA’s original clothing.

Undoubtedly one of Sweden’s biggest exports ever, ABBA’s treasure chest of pop hits will come alive again, performed by a 12-member entourage that includes some of the original band members. Songs such as “Dancing Queen”; “Money, Money, Money” and “Waterloo” will immediately transport you back to the 1970’s and 80’s.

Arrival From Sweden’s sound of ABBA is so identical to the original that even ABBA aficionados on Swedish National Radio determined that Arrival’s version of “Dancing Queen” was actually ABBA during an on-air contest.

Tickets for The Music of ABBA with Arrival From Sweden are priced at $58 and are available online at vilarpac.org, by phone at 888.920.ARTS(2787) or in person at the Vilar Center box office in Beaver Creek. Tickets are available online 24 hours a day; the box office is open Monday through Friday from 11am-5pm MST, with additional hours on performance days.

Renowned Chef Kelly Liken Hits The Eagle Farmer's Market With "Sowing Seeds" Gardeners

When the Vail Valley Foundation launched its new Sowing Seeds program at Brush Creek Elementary School in Eagle in the fall, there was no telling what would grow, both literally and figuratively. Ten months later, the program has taken root and has already “sprouted” a new venture.

Created in conjunction with Chef Kelly Liken of Restaurant Kelly Liken, the pilot program involves a greenhouse project where students plant and care for their own gardens. The program not only connects children to their environment, but also fosters an understanding of the origin of food and teaches responsibility through stimulating hands-on activities.

Now, "green" is literally changing hands as Liken joined several Brush Creek students at the Eagle Farmer's Market July 9 to help prep and sell the fruits of their labors. In addition to talking to her many fans and promoting the Sowing Seeds program, Liken helped the students make a salad, composed entirely of ingredients from the Brush Creek greenhouse.

While Liken will not be able to be a "regular" at the Farmer's Market due to her busy schedule, she is targeting select dates throughout the summer to join in the fun. The Eagle Farmer's Market takes place every Friday at Eagle Town Park from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m.

In addition to the presence at the Farmer's Market, vegetables grown in the Sowing Seeds greenhouse are already being integrated into the Brush Creek cafeteria and students are saving their lunch scraps to add to the composting stations in the greenhouse.

Vilar Center's July 14 Free Family Film Series Pre-Show Activities To Generate Funds For "Great American Bake Sale" Project

In conjunction with the Vilar Performing Arts Center's Free Family Film Series movie on Wednesday, families will have the opportunity to help local high school student Sarah Cochran as she works to raise money for her “Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale” project.

Beginning at 5:30 p.m., kids will be able to decorate their own cupcakes, with a suggested donation of $3 per cupcake. The Great American Bake Sale is a national campaign that mobilizes Americans to end childhood hunger by holding bake sales in their communities.

The free film, "Imagine That", starring Eddie Murphey and Yara Shahidi, is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. showtime. The move is rated PG.

Also new this week, the Beaver Creek Merchants will join in prior to the film for a summer fun family fashion show. Due to this addition, the weekly costume contest will not be held.

The Vilar Center's Free Family Film Series will conclude on Wednesday, July 21, with a screening of "Band Slam".

Herbie Hancock: 12 Grammys, 54 Albums and coming to the VPAC

Jazz and R&B legend Herbie Hancock will be performing at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek on August 25 as part of the VPAC's summer 2010 concert season. It's a performance not to be missed, and, an evening for which tickets are selling fast. Complete details for his performance and tickets can be found HERE.

Recently CNN caught up with Hancock to talk about his new album, "The Imagine Project." Hancock turned 70 in April, and he's taking his birthday celebration on the road, including a stop here in Beaver Creek, through the end of the summer. Recently, he headlined a concert at Carnegie Hall, playing fan favorites, as well as selections from his 54th album, "The Imagine Project." The disc includes collaborations with such pop stars as Pink, John Legend, Indie.Arie, Seal and Dave Matthews. Well-known world artists like sitarist Anoushka Shankar and Brazilian singer Ceu give an international twist to classic songs by John Lennon, Bob Dylan, the Beatles and Peter Gabriel.

"Seven different languages are on here, because I started thinking, 'Okay, if I'm going to make a global record, it has to be about honoring cultures outside of our own," says Hancock.

The Chicago-born musician was able to immerse himself in local musical flavor by recording "The Imagine Project" in India, Ireland, England, Brazil and the United States. "This record right here is really about peace through global collaboration," he says. "It's time to stop complaining and start acting."

Check out the entire CNN interview with the 12-time Grammy winner as he rehearsed new songs for his summer tour HERE.
