Avon Elementary Celebrate The Beat Students Headed To The White House September 7

For Avon Elementary School students Colby Lange and Luisa Taal, the road to enhanced learning via the performing arts will soon lead them to the home of the First Family as the pair of “Celebrate the Beat” dancers join forces with a national group that will participate in a special event at the White House on September 7 in conjunction with a tribute to the work of Judith Jamison.

First Lady Michelle Obama will host the workshop and performance in recognition of Jamison’s outstanding career as a dancer, choreographer and artistic director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre for the past 20 years.

Directed by Vail International Dance Festival director Damian Woetzel, the event is designed to celebrate the best in American dance, with the students participating in a workshop in the East Room. Lange and Taal, two of only four Colorado dancers to be invited, will team with other students from New York’s National Dance Institute and the National Dance Institute of New Mexico. The Avon Elementary pair will be accompanied to Washington by Celebrate the Beat artistic director Tracy Straus and program developer Heather Katz.

Other student organizations participating in the workshop include Alvin Ailey, Washington Ballet, Ballet Hispanico, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Interlochen and the Chicago Multi-Cultural Dance Center.

Following the workshop, the students will then attend a performance, also in the East Room, featuring artists and companies, including Alvin Ailey, Billy Elliott, Paul Taylor, Washington Ballet, Supercr3w and New York City Ballet.

Celebrate the Beat was incorporated into the Vail International Dance Festival in 2007 via a one-week program that brought free movement and joy to the inaugural group of Vail Valley children. The program was added to the curriculum of Avon Elementary School in 2008 and currently serves nearly 1,000 students in Eagle County thanks to the support of the Vail Valley Foundation.

National Dance Institute Founder To Conduct Celebrate The Beat Master Class At Ford Amphitheater On Saturday

The founder of the national program that resulted in the creation of Celebrate the Beat will make a trip to the Vail Valley Saturday, September 4, as internationally renowned arts education leader Jacques d’Amboise conducts a special Celebrate the Beat master class for top students from the Avon Elementary School program.

Scheduled from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater and open for public viewing, the class will provide an intimate behind the scenes look at the program, culminating with a 20-minute dance demonstration at noon.

Recognized as one of the finest classical dancers of our time, d’Amboise is now a leader in the arts education field with a model program that transforms thousands of school children via the magic and discipline of dance. In 1976, while still a principal dancer with New York City Ballet, he founded the National Dance Institute in the belief that the arts have a unique power to engage and motivate students towards excellence.

Cocktails For A Cause--The VPAC Takes Over The Bar At Larkspur On Wednesday

Drinks and door prizes will be the order of the evening Wednesday, September 1, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. as Vilar Performing Arts Center staff members Kris Sabel, Martha Brassel and Jason Denhart move behind the bar at Larkspur for an entertaining evening of “Cocktails For A Cause” to benefit the theatre’s STARS (Support The Arts Reaching Students) Program.

Twenty percent of all bar sales will be donated to the STARS Program for new initiatives this winter targeting high school students. Each year, the Vilar Center provides free transportation and tickets to more than 5,000 Eagle and Lake County students to expose them to the thrill of live performing arts.

In addition to supporting the performing arts and helping students, participants will also have the opportunity to win numerous door prizes throughout the evening, including $50 and $100 gift certificates from Larkspur, along with a private chef’s table for four at the restaurant, which represents a $580 value.

Vilar Center door prizes will include two tickets to a classical music performance at the theatre during the 2010-11 season, a pair of tickets to the winner’s choice of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet or Parsons Dance and a Bud Light Underground Sound package for the winter season.

If all this is not enough, participants will also receive double Loyalty Points from Larkspur on any food or drink purchased Wednesday evening. Larkspur is located at the base of Vail Mountain in the Golden Peak Lodge.

Benefit Kelly Liken Dinner Raises Funds For Vail Valley Foundation's Sowing Seeds Program

The servers shared the spotlight with the celebrity chef August 20 as Vail restaurateur and “Top Chef’s” Kelly Liken joined forces with a quartet of Brush Creek Elementary School students to produce a four-course epicurean delight, all to benefit the Vail Valley Foundation’s Sowing Seeds educational initiative.

Hosted by Margie and Tom Gart at their Lake Creek home, the event raised funds for the pilot greenhouse project at Brush Creek Elementary as local couples enjoyed the gourmet dining experience.

Created in conjunction with Liken, Sowing Seeds students plant and care for their own gardens in the Brush Creek greenhouse. The program not only connects children to their environment, but also fosters an understanding of the origin of food and teaches responsibility through stimulating hands-on activities.

Assisting Liken in the kitchen, along with serving appetizers to the guests were Brush Creek Elementary students Clementine Perkins, Abby Fields, Maddy Fields and Christopher Seabury.

In addition to the “hands on” experience of helping to prepare and serve, the herbs that Liken utilized in the preparation of the meal were grown in the Brush Creek greenhouse by the students.

Final 2010 Hot Summer Nights Tonight!

Message In A Bottle: The Police Tribute
Performing tonight at 6:30pm for Bud Light Hot Summer Nights

Tonight at 6:30pm Message In A Bottle: The Police Tribute takes the stage at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater for our final Bud Light Hot Summer Nights concert of the 2010 season.

If you have not done so already, tonight is your final chance to register for the VVF's email list and in doing so be entered to win a brand new Jackson Villain Kayak. Simply swing by the VVF tent, located by concessions, and give us your information to be entered. We will notify the winner, via email next week.

It's been a fantastic season for Bud Light Hot Summer Nights featuring acts like Solive, Toad The Wet Sprocket, the Laura Reed Trio, Killdares, Aggrolites and much more. We were also able to celebrate the Vail Beaver Creek 2015 World Alpine Ski Championships. A special thanks goes out to Bud Light, the Town of Vail, Volvo and the rest of our partners that make free concerts in the Vail Valley possible. Without support from our partners, and the general public we simply would not be able to have Hot Summer Nights.

Just because Hot Summer Nights is ending tonight does not mean that the Vail Valley Foundation is through with free concerts. We've already started working on the 2010-2011 Bud Light Street Beat winter free concert series and hope to announce those details soon.

Check out some photos from last week's Toad The Wet Sprocket show below.

Vilar Performing Arts Center Hosts Only Colorado Appearance By Jazz Legend Herbie Hancock On Wednesday

Fans of Herbie Hancock will immediately recognize his classic hit “Chameleon”. In a sense, the jazz legend himself is somewhat of a musical chameleon, whose compositions and recordings change direction as easily as the lizard’s skin changes color.

But, with Hancock, the transformations are the result of an unwillingness to stay the same and a mind that harbors a love of all music, rather than confining that affection to one particular style.

Such is the experience that awaits concertgoers Wednesday evening, August 25, when the jazz legend makes his lone Colorado stop of a nationwide tour at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek for an 8 p.m. celebration of his new release, “The Imagine Project".
"The Imagine Project" album features a wealth of guest performers, including Dave Matthews, Seal, Pink, Jeff Beck, the Chieftains, Toumani Diabete, Wayne Shorter, Chaka Khan and others, as well as recording sessions in several countries such as the U.S., India, England, France, Ireland and Brazil.

"It's a record that's basically about peace," Hancock added, crediting his attorney with inspiring the concept. "To me, the path towards peace is through global collaboration, so the heart of this record is the idea of making a global record or an international record, in multiple languages and in a variety of places."

Tickets for Herbie Hancock and “The Imagine Project” are priced at $98 and $128 and are available HERE, by phone at (970) 845-TIXS (8497) or 888.920.ARTS(2787) and in person at the Vilar Center box office in Beaver Creek.

Herbie Hancock's Imagine Project--"The Hardest Record I Ever Made"

Whether jazz legend Herbie Hancock's latest release, “The Imagine Project”, was a labor of love is open to debate. However, what is certain is that there was a great deal of labor involved.

Hancock, who turned 70 in April, will bring the sounds of “The Imagine Project”, along with a career and a half’s worth of hits, to the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek Wednesday evening, August 25, for a special 8 p.m. show. The Beaver Creek performance marks the lone Colorado stop for Hancock on a nationwide tour that features venues that include Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl, along with festivals such as Montreaux Jazz and Newport Jazz.

"The Imagine Project" was the hardest record I've ever made,” Hancock told Billboard.com., “and not just because of the music. Playing the 10 tracks was easy compared to what it took to put (the album) together."

The album features a wealth of guest performers, including Dave Matthews, Seal, Pink, Jeff Beck, the Chieftains, Toumani Diabete, Wayne Shorter, Chaka Khan and others, as well as recording sessions in several countries such as the U.S., India, England, France, Ireland and Brazil.

"Every song on the record was like putting a whole new album together," noted Hancock, who worked on the album with Larry Klein, co-producer of 2007's Grammy Award-winning ‘River/The Joni Letters’. "It's that kind of experience. You had to completely retool for each song. Normally you don't have to do that.”

"It's a record that's basically about peace," Hancock added, crediting his attorney with inspiring the concept. "To me, the path towards peace is through global collaboration, so the heart of this record is the idea of making a global record or an international record, in multiple languages and in a variety of places."

Tickets for Herbie Hancock and “The Imagine Project” are priced at $98 and $128 and are available HERE, by phone at (970) 845-TIXS (8497) or in person at the Vilar Center box office in Beaver Creek.

Singer-Songwriter Ani DiFranco Celebrates Her "Red Letter Year" Saturday At The Vilar Center

She has been called “fiercely independent”, “inspirational” and “the ultimate do-it-yourself songwriter”.

Saturday evening, August 14, folk/rocker Ani DiFranco will bring all that and more when she stops by the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek for an 8 p.m. show. A celebration of her latest release, “Red Letter Year”, along with hits from her extensive song list, the show will also mark one of only three tour dates for DiFranco in Colorado this summer.

An ardent feminist and an open bisexual, her songs tackled issues like rape, abortion, and sexism with insight and compassion, the music's empowering attitude and anger tempered by the poignant candor of singer/songwriter confessionalism.

Now, after two decades of playing over a hundred shows a year, DiFranco is packing clubs from the Hard Rock in Vegas to Carnegie Hall in New York. Her Righteous Babe label employs more than a dozen people in her hometown of Buffalo, and supports the recordings of cutting edge artists, while her rhythmic, staccato guitar technique has innovated the way the instrument is played.

The self-described “Little Folksinger” is more than happy to just sit back and make art.

Tickets for Ani DiFranco are priced at $50 and are available HERE, by phone at 888.920.ARTS(2787) or in person at the Vilar Center box office in Beaver Creek.

Spreading The Word

The first documented out of state sighting of a Vail-Beaver Creek 2015 World Championships bumper stickers comes courtesy of our friend and U.S. Ski Team member Steven Nyman, who is proudly spreading the good word via his pickup truck.

The stickers were handed out in conjunction with the July 20 Community Celebration, which allowed the Vail Valley community to toast the success of winning the 2015 bid. While not in attendance, Nyman got his hands on one of the coveted stickers through his friend Ken Hoeve of TV8 fame.

Steven was on hand to join in the initial celebration of the World Championships win on June 3 as he was in town competing in the Stand Up Paddling event at the Teva Mountain Games when the bid was announced.

We also look forward to seeing him again soon for the annual Birds of Prey World Cup at Beaver Creek, December 3-5, when Steven and the rest of the U.S. Men's Team will be on hand for Downhill, Super-G and Giant Slalom races.

Thanks for helping us spread the word Steven and see ya soon.

Country Superstar Randy Travis Visits The Vilar Center Monday

He has been called the “dominant male voice in country music”, sounding like the perfect mix of George Jones and Merle Haggard. On Monday, August 9, Randy Travis will bring a pickup truck full of career recording awards to Beaver Creek for an 8 p.m. show at the Vilar Performing Arts Center, one of only two tour stops in Colorado this summer.

Like the Beatles in rock, Travis’ emergence as a major star on the country-western landscape marked a generational shift in country music. When his “Storms of Life” came out in 1986, country music was still wallowing in the post-urban cowboy recession, chasing elusive crossover dreams. Travis brought the music back to its basics, winning the Country Music Association's Horizon Award in 1986 and named the association's Male Vocalist of the Year in 1987 and 1988.

The last two singles from Storms of Life, "Diggin' Up Bones" and "No Place Like Home," hit number one and two, respectively. "Forever and Ever, Amen", the first single from his second album, 1987's Always & Forever, began a streak of seven straight number one singles that ran through 1989.

Now, with record sales over 25 million, 22 number one hits, six number one albums, six Grammy's, six CMA's, nine ACM's, ten AMA's, seven Dove Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, he is the rare and lucky man who has been able to make all his dreams come true.

Tickets for Randy Travis at $98/$123/$148 and are available online HERE, by phone at 888.920.ARTS(2787) or in person at the Vilar Center box office in Beaver Creek.

Vail International Dance Festival: Notes from an Intern 2

Each year the Vail International Dance Festival brings some of the best dancers from around the world to stages in the Vail Valley. In addition to the dancers, we also bring countless stage hands, production managers, company mangers and interns to town.

This is the second post about the 2010 Festival from the perspective of one of our Interns, Erica Sheftman. Sheftman, a Junior studying History and Literature at Harvard University has been assisting in all aspects of the Festival including video and photos. Enjoy her second dispatch as an embedded intern below and look for more posts in the coming days.

FROM ERICA SHEFTMAN:
I felt so lucky to have been at International Evenings of Dance I last night. The combinations and partnerships I witnessed yesterday are some that I never thought I'd see gathered on one stage. The thrilling virtuosity and symbiosis of the Argentinian star of American Ballet Theatre, Herman Cornejo, matched with the Japanese Misa Kuranaga from Boston Ballet; the Russian-German ABT soloist Daniil Simkin in a Chopin/Robbins melange as well as a charming salute to l'homme francais, Les Bourgeois; the New York City Ballet imports Tiler Peck, Joaquin De Luz, and Robert Fairchild, as well as the Cambodian Freelance artist Sokvannara Sar in a world premiere by Larry Keigwin set to Aretha Franklin; American Ballet Theatre Resident Choreographer Alexei Ratmansky's world premiere for NYCB ballerina Wendy Whelan, a tribute to flamenco complemented by the string quintet Sybarite 5...and the list goes on and on.

Here is a video montage of Royal Ballet of London stars Eric Underwood and Sarah Lamb rehearsing for their appearance tonight at International Evenings II. She is so angelic and delicate and he so grounded and masculine, they make for a stunning couple and have the most breathtaking plasticity and physical chemistry.

At the gala last night, set up at a tent in the Betty Ford gardens, dancers and patrons mingled and danced until midnight; Gabriel Misse, the tango star from Buenos Aires, sashayed and seduced women and men and was generally the life of the party, and he was joined by company members from Sunday's production of Romper el Piso. They are not to be missed; if last night's standing ovation for Misse and his partner Natalia Hills was any indication, tomorrow the lid of the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater is sure to pop off. Hopefully the weather holds.

Join us for UpClose: Tango with Misse, Hills, Artistic Director Damian Woetzel and School of American Ballet faculty member/tango devotee Suki Schorer today at 2pm at the Amphitheater; aftewards, all will coalesce at last night's tent for a public milonga.

Opening for Pacific Northwest Ballet's Broadway, Ballet & Beyond performance at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater, the kids got to perform on the big stage as part of the Festival.

Enjoy a video from their performance below.

Celebrate The Beat (CTB) teaches inspirational music and dance classes which help children discover their potential by motivating them to believe in themselves, value artistic expression and develop a personal standard of excellence. During school hours, our Teaching Artists serve an entire grade or an entire school by creating a music and dance extravaganza inspired by that year’s educational theme. The teachers are professional dancers, choreographers, musicians and composers, all of whom believe that the arts should be an integral part of every child's education.

Without support from donors Vail Valley Foundation education efforts like Celebrate The Beat would not be possible. To support Arts Education, and Celebrate The Beat, please CLICK HERE.

Legendary Delta Bluesman Keb' Mo' Brings Unique Meld Of Old And New To The Vilar Center Thursday

The most requested artist in the history of the Vilar Performing Arts Center will make his triumphant return to the theatre on Thursday evening, August 5, at 9 p.m. when legendary Delta bluesman Keb’Mo’ brings his unique meld of old and new musical styles to Beaver Creek.

His distinctive sound embraces multiple eras and genres, including pop, rock folk and jazz, in which he is well-versed. In total, it owes as much to contemporary music's singer-songwriter movement, including his longtime friends and collaborators Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne, as to the spirit of blues godfather Robert Johnson that dwells in his work.

In 1994 he released his debut album, “Keb' Mo'”, which was his new professional name; an African-American version of his given name that he felt would better reflect his blues orientation. The record earned glowing reviews from such publications as the New York Times, People, and the Houston Chronicle, while critics hailed Mo' as an important new voice with both authentic blues roots and a contemporary sound.

He began opening for stars such as Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana, Buddy Guy, Joe Cocker, and George Clinton. In 1996 Mo' released his second album, Just Like You, which won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album--as did his next release, Slow Down, in 1998.

Mo's music could soon be heard everywhere--on radio; on the television series Touched By an Angel and the CBS drama The Promised Land; on several film soundtracks, including One Fine Day, Tin Cup, and Down in the Delta; and on the concert stage, as Mo' shared star billing with such performers as Bonnie Raitt and Celine Dion.

"When I first heard Delta blues," Mo' told Guitar Player Magazine, "it really grabbed me and became my foundation as a player, but it never occurred to me to shut off other things that make me who I am as a musician."

Tickets for Keb’ Mo’ are priced at $58 and are available HERE, by phone at 888.920.ARTS(2787) or in person at the Vilar Center box office in Beaver Creek.

Each year the Vail International Dance Festival brings some of the best dancers from around the world to stages in the Vail Valley. In addition to the dancers, we also bring countless stage hands, production managers, company mangers and interns to town.

Moving forward for the 2010 Festival we will be chronicling the Festival from the perspective of one of our Interns, Erica Sheftman. Sheftman, a Junior studying History and Literature at Harvard University has been assisting in all aspects of the Festival including video and photos. Enjoy her first dispatch as an embedded intern below and look for more posts in the coming days.

FROM ERICA SHEFTMAN:
On Wednesday, I watched Artistic Director Damian Woetzel rehearse New York City Ballet (NYCB) principals Tiler Peck and Joaquin De Luz in a suite of collaborations between choreographer Jerome Robbins and the composer Frederic Chopin. Damian has spoken of his relationship with Robbins often, including to Time Out New York editor Gia Kourlas in his farewell season at NYCB; he said then that during rehearsals with Jerry he "watched him take [the dance] apart in certain places and let other things go by and...the room was alive with the seriousness of his intent...The idea of working with someone like that changed everything."

Tiler and Joaquin will dance a series of excerpts titled 3 Chopin Dances as part of International Evenings of Dance. On Thursday, August 5 they will rehearse the suite for the public as part of Up Close: Stars of International Evenings of Dance - hosted by Damian at 6pm - and they will dance it on Saturday, August 7 at 7:30pm as part of Intenrational Evenings of Dance II.

The suite will include selections from Robbins' extended pas de deux Other Dances - featured in the above video montage - as well as from his ballet Dances at a Gathering and a pas de deux created for Mikhail Baryshnikov and NYCB ballerina Patricia McBride for a live telecast, "Baryshnikov at the White House," hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Carter. The latter hasn't been seen since 1979.

The White House telecast, playing on a VHS player in the studio at the Vail Mountain School where Festival dancers have been warming up and rehearsing, confirmed some partnering maneuvers and stylistic choices, and supplied the faint mumurs of Chopin.

It's not just Robbins being honored; through 3 Chopin Dances, the 2010 incarnation of Vail International Dance Festival pays tribute to the bicentennial of Chopin's birth. In rehearsal, Damian spoke of creating mood and emotion through a purposeful reticence in relation to Chopin's various waltzes and mazurkas.

In the same Time Out New York interview, he said, "It was how one was dancing to the music and not so much on the music...in Other Dances, as the pas de deux begins, it was of paramount importance that one not walk on the beat of the music, but rather to be slightly slower than the rhythm."

Watch as Tiler and Joaquin prepare the opening pas de deux with Damian watching on.
