Violinist Chee-Yun Pays A Visit To Avon Elementary First Notes Orchestra

Classical music went to school Tuesday afternoon, January 18, as violinist Chee-Yun paid a visit to the second grade First Notes Orchestra at Avon Elementary School. Chee-Yun, accompanied by Jeewon Park and Jeremy Turner, played a trio of classical pieces to the amazement of the young musicians, while also taking questions from the class.

Questions ranged from the standard "When did you begin playing the violin?" to a bit more cerebral "How many songs have you played in your life?" The answer was about 40,000. The questions also revealed that the First Notes students have played with someone famous that Chee-Yun has not--Yo-Yo Ma. The First Notes Orchestra performed with Ma this past summer at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater as part of Imagination Celebration.

Prior to the conclusion of the visit, Chee-Yun and friends joined the orchestra for a stirring rendition of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy".

Chee-Yun and friends will play a special benefit concert Wednesday evening at the Vilar Performing Arts Center at 6:30 p.m. Proceeds from the performance will benefit the June S. Kang Love of the Arts Scholarship, which is administerd by the Vail Valley Foundation. Tickets for the performance are still available.
